Types of Air Freight and Shipment Services

Air freight packages differ in weight, size and type. The type and duration of the delivery required also differs from one package to another. The air courier industry has various service categories to suit various types of packages and shipment needs. Here is a brief summary of the various services offered to help you decide on the best service for you.

The most common and simplest form of air container shipping has to do with household goods organization category. This category involves the transporting of everyday household goods such as furniture, house goods and accessories. Most of these items do not require special handling and so it can easily and speedily be handled, depending on the delivery option selected.

Support class category covers the transportation of things requiring express of overnight delivery such as small items, letters and small packages. These items are usually small and easy to handle and normally come in the customized packaging of the freight company. There are a number of companies, large and small that are reputable providers of this type of air freight services.

Another category is known as parcel or ground shipment. Items that fall under this category are usually heavier and larger than the previous mentioned categories. Shipment of these types of items may take several days and the destination may cover between 500 to 700 miles daily. The weight of most packages sent using ground shipments fall under 100 pounds or each item would be below 70 pounds. Ground shipment may also travel by air or rail.

If your package to be transferred is much larger then you may require a Less than Truck Load service. This is used when the cargo is less than 15,000 pounds. Sometimes, the service may be offered in a mixed freight environment, meaning that the cargo may be combined with others and even transferred from one means of carriage to another before arriving in final destination.

Truckload freights are used for packages or loads that fall within 15,000 and 43,000 pounds. This form of container shipping is usually delivered in the same container it was shipped. This form of transportation can be used to transport heavy machinery and even cars. It may take longer periods to reach destination and would attract higher costs and excess baggage charges.

The cost or rates of shipping packages is determined on various factors including the type of package, destination, speed of delivery required, service category and the service provider.
